A Personal Eye into Java, Sun Microsystems and the Future.

After becoming CEO of Sun Microsystems a year ago, Jonathan Schwartz has managed to turn the bleeding company around. Now, he has designs on India. He spoke to a correspondant and shared his views exclusively:

What are your challenges?: We have been spending a lot of time with customers in key markets like India. But the biggest strategic challenge for Sun is to ensure that our core developer platforms like Java are adopted globally. Java is already on more mobile handsets than any other technology in the world. That means more consumers globally know Java than any other technology. Hence, there is a bigger need to support Java developers. Secondly, we need to boost adoption of the Sun Solaris operating system, especially via the open source community, and move into newer businesses and new opportunities across the world.

What has your Work-from-Home (WFH) strategy achieved other than cutting costs? : One of the reasons why employees love working at Sun is because they have the option of working from home, and on flexible schedules. If you have to travel two hours each way to reach your Bangalore office, it doesn't help productivity. The evolution of WFH strategy is when we start shutting down our campuses in future. Today's campuses are remainders of the old way of working together. More of our employees like to meet at Starbucks to plan a new product, or strategise new marketing plans. People today like to work where they are, and not drive long distances just to work together.

The largest numbers of Java developers are in India. Do you benefit from this? : The advantage of having more Java consumers through mobile handsets is yet to be tapped. Having one of the most vibrant developer communities in the world in India opens us up to many opportunities. There is a levelling force that occurs with the adoption of the Internet. Work can move everywhere on earth, but more importantly, the opportunity can also move. And what today may look like an outsourcing activity from the US to India, will in turn spawn a variety of start-ups across India, creating businesses that exploit their reach globally.

How much role do you see India playing in Sun's scheme of things? : We have gone through a transformation cycle from a time when enterprises dominated the technology industry to one in which consumers dominate the technology industry. The most valuable Internet businesses are those that serve consumers. The fact that India has such a large well-educated population suggests that it will be a fulcrum for changes that will influence the global business environment. China and India hold a potential far greater than Europe or North America. India has the capacity and its software developers the potential to utterly transform the global technology marketplace.
